POSITION SUMMARYCoordinates and supervises the planning, development and implementation of various environmental and architectural signage and graphic projects.PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIESCoordinates, plans and schedules the activities of personnel engaged in the design, manufacturing and installation phases of bus and rail signage, maps and decals.Coordinates the design, production and installation of station graphics, ADA accessible path signage presentations and exhibits.Supervises and monitors the development and execution of signage at rail stations, bus terminals, and various CTA facilities.Assists in the coordination with Planning Department to determine the design and placement of station elements and related signage.Evaluates and develops the scope of work involved in signage projects and coordinates and monitors the activities of vendors engaged in a variety of signage projects. Maintains and upgrades graphic production equipment.Works cooperatively with various departments, such as Construction Engineering, Planning, Facilities Engineering, Purchasing, and Rail Operations in developing and executing various signage and wayfinding projects.Meets with civic and community groups and institutions to discuss signage and communication issues.Designs informational signs and decals using appropriate computer software.Participates in studies of the feasibility, usefulness and effectiveness of graphics projects and presents recommendations to appropriate personnel.Performs the duties of the Manager, Signage & Wayfinding during periods of absence.Performs related duties as assigned.MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIESReporting to this position are the following jobs:Job TitleCHALLENGES* Cross communication with various departments to ensure projects are completed by deadline.* Keeping production skills and technology current with industry standards.EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS* Bachelor’s Degree in Graphic Design or Graphic Arts or a combination of education and approximately 5 years of experience* Required to possess a valid Illinois driver’s license.PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS* Must be able to lift fifty pounds or greater, withstand areas of height.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES* Working knowledge of the latest version of the Adobe Creative Suite products, especially Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign.* General knowledge of computer to plate technology.* General knowledge of the principles, practice, methods, and techniques used in graphics and library management.* Intermediate graphic design and desktop publishing software skills.* Intermediate and highly-developed graphic design, layout, and typographic skills.* Strong written and verbal communication skills.* Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.* Strong project management skills.* Ability to differentiate different graphic design styles and familiarity with current graphic design trends.WORKING CONDITIONS* Usual office working conditions.* On call 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.* Subject to prevailing weather conditions when traveling within the Chicago Metropolitan Area when conducting field inspections, investigations and infrastructure assessments of shops, garages, yards, terminals and elevated subway and ballasted track areas adjacent to electrified contact rails and moving vehicles.* Occasionally required to travel to other transit properties located throughout North America.EQUIPMENT, TOOLS, AND MATERIALS UTILIZED* Graphic design software, e.g., AutoCAD, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe, InDesign, Adobe Photoshop, Corel Draw, Macromedia Freehand and Quark Express, Macintosh/PC Platforms.* Signage production equipment, e.g. scanners, plotters, vinyl cutters, vinyl printer and laminators.
