Senior Engineer LTE Network Test Systems – ENG001509

The Senior Engineer LTE Network Test Systems will be responsible engineering, installation, configuration, integration, operation, support, and maintenance of all end-to-end network elements & test equipment platforms of the multi-vendor LTE network lab in Schaumburg, IL. The role will serve as one of the hands-on specialists (SMEs) for LTE network equipment configuration and testing within UScellular and assist a variety of engineering and operations groups in their testing objectives. The position will also support the lab’s development of additional network testing capabilities for LTE E-UTRAN, EPC, and VoLTE capabilities, features, and architectures!

  • Engineer, configure, operate and tackle (trouble shoot) issues with the (LTE) network lab. Build and follow U.S. Cellular lab processes and procedures to address testing and scheduling of requests from a number of multi-functional technical teams.

Perform the physical and software configuration of all LTE network elements/test equipment to support lab testing, including:

  • Installation and validation of major and minor (patch) software releases.
  • LTE (network) equipment data fill and configuration for Evolved NodeBs (eNBs), Mobility Management Entities (MMEs), Mobility Gateways (S/P-GWs), Home Subscriber Servers (HSSs), Policy Charging and Rules Function (PCRFs), aggregation routers, cell site routers, L2/L3 switches and routers, as well as other relevant equipment.
  • LTE test equipment configuration for multi-user equipment (UE) emulators, signal/protocol stack analyzers, impairment appliances, core network load generators, mean opinion score (MOS) test platforms, base station analyzers, spectrum analyzers, RF variable attenuators, and other associated equipment.
  • Ethernet and fiber optic cable & connector preparation plus installation. Coaxial cable and connector preparation and installation. Lab WAN network management and configuration.
  • Work closely with UScellular’s manufacturer partners for network equipment to develop method of procedures (MOPs) for equipment upgrades and reconfiguration.
  • Closely stick to sound (change) management procedures for hardware, software, logical, and physical network configurations. Maintain equipment for all network elements and test platforms. Follow all of UScellular’s power, grounding, and cabling guidelines for the network equipment.
  • Assist the Manager of the (LTE Network) Lab with forecasting for testing needs in advance to ensure that the accurate test equipment is in place. Maintain a safe, clean, and organized lab environment. Train lab users on test equipment, procedures and lab capabilities!


Minimum of 5 to 8 years relevant work experience. Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) or equivalent required. A Master’s Degree (MSEE) or equivalent is helpful.

Proven understanding and 2-4 years combined experience working w/1xRTT/EVDO Rev A and 4G E-UTRAN/EPC wireless network technology and architecture is required. Experience with IP networking highly preferred. Cisco CCNA/CCNE Certification desirable. Experience with 3G 1xRTT/1xEV-DO Rev.

Hands on experience in system design, integration, testing, troubleshooting, and debugging. A track record of delivering results under tight schedules in a team context. Expertise in using software debuggers and lab test equipment. Excellent troubleshooting, analysis, and problem solving skills.

Strong technical skills related to core network HW/SW architectures and RF systems architecture, design, and analysis is required. Knowledge of 3GPP specifications and LTE is required. Experience configuring the network (LTE) equipment and Operational Support System (OSS) platforms of one or more of the following network equipment manufacturers is required: ALU, Cisco, Ericsson, Nokia-Siemens, Openet, and Samsung.

Experience in integrating network lab testing and monitoring platforms from different test equipment manufacturers. Experience working with various Ethernet, fiber optic, and coaxial cabling types. Track record as a validated problem solver and an effective teammate. Experience in crafting (technical) documentation. Up to 10% air travel to test equipment and network equipment manufacturer R&D facilities. Network technology (wireless) is helpful.
